Erratic weather, intensified by deforestation, is triggering frequent floods and landslides, especially along rivers like Nyamwamba and Semliki. These disasters repeatedly displace communities in Kasese and Ntoroko, damage infrastructure and destroy crops. Farmers now face unpredictable seasons, threatening food security and livelihoods for communities around the mountain. Beyond environmental and economic impacts, the crisis threatens sacred sites and spiritual traditions tied to the mountains.
The Rwenzori Region, once a symbol of abundance is now facing an existential threat. Humanity is trailing behind a rapidly shifting climate. The region stands at the frontline of Uganda’s climate crisis and demands immediate intervention.
Creations Forum Africa (CAF) calls for urgent climate justice through:
- Sustainable land management
- Reforestation and watershed protection
- Climate-resilient infrastructure
- Community-based adaptation strategies
- Robust early warning systems
- Emergency preparedness and response
CAF stresses that the fate of the Rwenzori is not only a regional concern but a global one. CAF therefore, urges local, national and global stakeholders to invest in restoring the region’s ecological balance. The mountains are a lifeline for ecosystems and communities across borders. Immediate investment and collective actions are needed to restore ecological integrity and protect those most affected.
